Art Up: New Exhibit by Percy Aguayo

We are pleased to announce that Root Hill's next art exhibit will be from our own Percy Aguayo. Percy has a unique style that connotes both beauty and mystery. His art has a layered quality illustrating the emotions of the subjects within his art. He has two books out featuring his work: Blur and Apartment Twenty Five(Mature Content).
Originally from Caracas, Venezuela, with quality time in Northern California, Percy now resides in Brooklyn where he continues to develop his art.

*Exhibit kicks off this weekend.

The Mural

Back in 2009, in a time when it wasn't snowing every other day, we asked a wonderful designer, Katherine Gressel, to create a interesting and unique mural to go on the outside of the building. What was created was an colorful design depicting some animals that once lived in (and still live in) the Gowanus Canal. It also shows images relating to Root Hill and the neighborhood we love. It is meant to add to the growing colorful art that comes from Gowanus area. The images of the animals are obvious, but you can also find an image of Helen, the original landlord for the building, as well as an image of Kiso the dog. Please swing over to Katherine Gressel site to see more photos of the mural and the wonderful other work that she has done and continues to do.

Neighbors: Celebrity Sighting...Film Biz...

If you haven't notice we have a whole lot of celebrities moving into the area.
Hey isn't that...Oh my gosh that's...
...the Lamp and Coffee Mugs from last weeks hot TV show and/or Film...amazing!

Your favorite famous coaches, chairs, lamps, kitchenware, office supplies, toys, tables, glassware, and more famous stuff all under one roof at Film Biz Recycling Prop Shop.
Formerly of Long Island City, Film Biz Recycling is now one of our new neighbors just around the corner at 540 President St. (Textile Factory Basement). There shop/showroom is filled with items that have been donated by production companies for Film and Television. If you didn't know there are a lot of items left over after a day on the set. In the past people would simply throw away these items, but now because of the not-for-profit Film Biz Recycling these items can have a new home; and that home can be yours! Their prices are low and you are giving a home to a celebrity item that would have been tossed to the curb.

Swing over and get some cool stuff for your pad and check out more on their site: FilmBizRecycling.org

Croissant...mmmh

Croissants were invented by magical winged fairies...or someone else from long ago.
Croissants (according to wiki) were probably invented sometime before the 13th century by Austrians. This ancient croissant was called a kipferl, which was made plain, filled with nuts, or something else even more delicious. The Croissant gain popularity much much much later in 1839 when August Zang, an Austrian, opened a bakery in Paris. The French loved the pasty so much that they began to copy it. But the French called the kipferl a crescent (croissant) because of its' shape. We just call croissants "mmh mmhh good" because of its' taste. We are very glad that these pastries are still popular today because we love to fill ours with ham & cheese, or chocolate. mmmh!

Artist Rewind - L.J. Lindhurst of 'Little Shiny Things'

In October 2010 we had the pleasure (with the help of Contaminate NYC) of presenting 'Little Shiny Things' featuring paintings by local artist L.J. Lindhurst. You might remember the realistic paintings of doll faces and toys hanging on the walls. L.J. Lindhurst has recently finished a new series of paintings called "Industrials", which she has posted on her site. Like the the images presented at Root Hill, these new works have a realistic feel to them and at first glance seem like photographs. But these pieces are so much more. With paint L.J. Lindhurst has captured some emotion that is lacking in most photography. Her work this time focuses on man-made elements associated with 'industry'. Although these elements seem cold in reality, they express something more in her paintings. If you have a moment swing over to her site and check out her ongoing work.

More Rewind of L.J. Lindhurst...

We Support: Sean Casey Animal Rescue

We love animals! We love dogs, cats, lizards, and...well you get the picture. Here in NYC their are some many wonderful animals that need homes. We support groups like Sean Casey Animal Rescue, which Rehabilitates and Places reptiles, amphibians, exotic, and domestic animals. Their mission is to:
The purpose of this endeavor is to aid unfortunate animals in the interest of a higher quality of life. We take in rescued, confiscated, neglected, injured, ill, unmanageable, or otherwise unwanted animals from private owners, zoos, shelters, and other public organizations. These animals are cared for, and/or rehabilitated to the best of our ability and means until which time they can be found healthy, happy homes - whether it be through adoption to qualified candidates or legally released into habitats suitable to the specific species in conjunction with licensed wildlife rehabilitators.
We can't think of anything better than providing a home for an animal in need.
If you have a safe home for a new pet, want to make a contribution, or know anyone who can help check out their website here: Sean Casey's NYAnimalRescue.org
and see updated info on adoption on their facebook page.
